A couple of years back, I stumbled onto Da Jie Famous Wanton Noodles while wandering through the Jalan Besar area. I neglected writing about it (as I have for many eating excursions), and over the years, forgot the name. However, I did remember making a mental note to myself that this place was worth a re-visit.
Recently, I promised someone to try a certain wanton noodle stall and was merely given an address and the name of the stall.
Guess what? It turned out to be this very same stall that I had eaten at. Right on the corner of Jalan Besar and Sam Leong Road.
After so many years, I maintain the same opinion: worth re-visiting.
What’s good about it? The flavour of the sauce is good. I didn’t over-analyse it. There’s a nice helping of fried lard. The char siew isn’t sliced ultra thin and doesn’t have a sawdust-like texture.
However, the noodles are from a supplier, so while it is al dente, it lacks some uniqueness. Also, the wanton skin is too thick for my liking. It is more appropriate for fried wantons because it holds the crispiness, but for wantons in soup, I prefer a more delicate skin.
Still, for $3. Simple. Tasty. Gets the job done.
